We both continued looking up at the moon until the stars joined her a couple of hours later. We did not say a word to each other the whole time. I think both of us were thinking quietly about our friends and family back home.
As it got late into the night, Jake rolled over and looked at me. “What are we going to do now Capt.?” Jake asked with a tired look in his eyes. “We will try to find help,” I replied. “Get some sleep. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow.”
“I am scared Capt.” “I know you are Jake.” I then reached into Harry’s duffle bag and pulled out the candy bar. I broke it into three pieces and offered Jake his share. He gladly accepted and ate his half in one bite. I slowly ate my share until it was gone. I saved the other half for Ron to eat in the morning.
I looked at Jake and mentioned how I felt when I jumped from the plane into the ocean and did not see him or Ron anywhere. Only when I saw the two sets of footprints in the sand is when I felt safe again. Jake then said something that scared me to death. He said that he had carried Ron up the beach. There should of only been one set of footprints in the sand.
I thought for a moment and wondered who could have left the other footprints. Maybe Jake was delirious from being at sea for so long that he was not thinking straight. I asked Jake if he was sure he carried Ron up the beach. He told me how Ron had fallen in the water when I went back inside the plane. He then said he put Ron over his shoulder and carried him.

As the sun rose over us the next morning, I lay on my back and did not move a muscle. I just stared at the beautiful light blue sky above me. The soft colors gave me a feeling of safety for a brief moment. All of the sudden, I heard Ron scream!

About the Author
Charles Latham Doxey was born 1973 in Carrollton, Georgia, thirty miles west of Atlanta. He attended high school in the same town and began college at Georgia Southern University. He later graduated from the State University of West Georgia with a B.A. in Mass Communications and a minor in Psychology.
His father, a well-known author, had taught him from a young age the importance of writing. He has won many writing awards throughout his young life.
