Colonel's hands tightened on the
controls as if somehow he could, by force of will, propel 74 Fox faster through
the night toward the road code named "Zulu." He felt himself reaching out; reaching ahead
through the Plexiglas across the miles that separated him from the wounded
Agents.
"436; 74 FOX - JAY, HOW ARE
YOU DOING?"
"OK, COLONEL, OK."
"JAY, CAN YOU GIVE ME A
VEHICLE DESCRIPTION?"
"AFFIRMATIVE, IT'S A LATE
MODEL BLACK VAN. THEY JUST..... THEY
JUST DROVE BY AND OPENED UP ON US."
Colonel swore under his breath,
then pressed the push to talk switch again on the cyclic stick. "JAY, HOW'S MANDO DOING?"
"HE'S BEEN HIT IN THE LEGS
TOO, BUT NEITHER OF US ARE BLEEDING TOO BADLY.....THE CAR IS A MESS
THOUGH."
"10-04, JAY, TRY YOUR
OVERHEAD AND SEE IF THEY STILL WORK."
"STANDBY" came the
reply, then, "COLONEL, THEY'RE ON THEY'RE WORKING!"
"10-04 JAY, WE HAVE YOU IN
SIGHT; ETA - 3 MINUTES."
Colonel gave instructions to his
observer to get all the medical supplies from the first aid box before landing
so that they would be ready.
He had purposely climbed to look
for the red and blue lights of the stricken unit and now was engaged in dumping
altitude to make his approach.
He came in fast, braking into a
hover at the last second and sat down on the road a short distance from the
bullet-riddled sedan. In seconds, he and
his observer were on the ground and running.
He could see the ashen faces of the Agents and the bullet holes in the
windshield of the Chevrolet sedan.
The observer, a member of
D.A.R.T. (Desert Area Rescue Team), began immediate first aid.
Colonel felt both rage and
helplessness. He was not a doctor, but
he was a pilot.
"Mando,
Jay - I'm going after the van if you guys will be OK here with Tom until Life
Flight arrives."
"Yeah, we'll be OK," Mando
and Jay replied together.

Border Gold takes place in the
contemporary southwestern
That quiet however, is suddenly
shattered by heavily armed, well-organized drug smugglers who ruthlessly kill
anyone who would pose a threat to their operation.
The intent of this book is to
give one a real feel for what it's like to "Ride The River" with the
U.S. Border Patrol. Upon finishing the
book the reader will have gained much insight into Border Patrol operations as
well as the terminology used by Agents in the field.
Many of the occurrences in this
book are true with the names and locations changed only slightly, since their
personalities are reflected in the writing.
Finally, the locations are very

About the Author
The author was born in
After a seven year stint in the
US Navy as a Nuclear Power Plant Operator on various nuclear submarines, he was selected for
a position in the United States Border Patrol. The author served more than 27
years in the US Border Patrol with nine of those years serving as a Firearms
Instructor at the
He retired in 1996, but was
rehired two years later to once again teach Border Patrol Agent Trainees the
art of defensive weapon craft.
