About the Book

This story for the middle reader shares the life of ten-year-old Evy Mae in rural Kentucky in 1906.  Evy Mae was the great-granddaughter of Captain William Becknell, “Father of the Santa Fe trail.”

Discover the unusual circumstances surrounding the old necklace, and unravel the mystery of the “screeching in the night.”  The reader will be transported to a time of old-fashioned sorghum making, Appalachian cooking and crafts, and mountain music.  This enchanting story brings to life the customs and experiences of these unique mountain people.
