About the Book

Cry of the Re-awakened Child is a collection of poems about what ultimately matters, especially when one is searching for the meaning of living on earth in peace. It is provocative and consuming. This collection of poems will engulf you by the endearing spirit of love it expresses and will have you soaring upon the wings of joy it unfolds before you. As you embark upon this poetic journey, you will realize a sense of liberation from the anguish brought forth by hatred and will experience a joyful feeling in your soul as it pulls you out of the somberness of sorrow.

I have written this book hoping that it will reveal the inner strength of each person and make them recognize the bond that exist between them and the spirit of their ancestors. I also hope as indicated below in “The Voices of Nature” that every person traveling along this poetic journey will recognize the vital role of the in-animates in their daily survival –

I am the sun,

The source of your warmth,

I am the sky,

The embodiment of your serenity,

I am the land,

The source of your sustenance

I am the mountain

Upon which you stand

I am the rain, your harvest

I make bountiful.

I am the wind,

Your burden I carry,

I am the tree,

Beneath my trunk

A refuge you seek,

I am the river,

Your thirst I quench

I am a song,

Your comfort I assure,

I am a dance,

My footprint you follow

In your celebration of life

I am an art,

The expression you see

In your horizon

I am life,

A part of your mystery

Yet to be unfolded;

So, destroy me not

For a short lived comfort

I too am God force.

In conclusion, “Cry of the Re-awakened Child” is also written in honor of our children, who in the face adversities have risen and touched the sky. I also hope that for those children who have yet to see the light will be comforted by this poetic journey – “Cry of The Reawakened Child”

About the Author

UmValli Lowenthal was born in Liberia, West Africa to a Jewish father and a Moslem mother. His father, Mr. Hans Moritz Lowenthal, was a German national but with a Hebrew ancestry. He immigrated to the Republic of Liberia in the late 1930s in search of a safe haven from the Jewish Holocaust in Germany. On the other hand, Umvalli Lowenthal’s mother, Ms. Gbaene Meima Taweh, who is of the Islamic and Traditional African religious persuasions, hails from the Vai, Mende and Gola ethnic groups (The Manubalah Clan) in the southwestern region of the Republic of Liberia, West Africa.

UmValli Lowenthal completed his secondary education with honors at Bishop Carroll High School, in Liberia, West Africa. At age 21, he came to the United States to attend Temple University, where he earned a B. A. degree in Biochemistry and a B.Sc. degree in Pharmacy. He has practiced Pharmacy all through his adult life. Launching his career as a hospital pharmacist at Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mr. Lowenthal proceeded to own and operate his own community pharmacy. This move, he said, was made to fulfill his quest of providing a better pharmaceutical service to the people of his Baltimore community. Mr. Lowenthal is a man with a passionate love for life and liberty, especially, for his fellow being.

UmValli Lowenthal’s literary interest can be traced back to his secondary school days, where he wrote and served as co-editor for his school newspaper. His main purpose for writing then was to awaken his fellow youth to the reality of life and the priceless and enriched culture they possessed. The burning desire to express himself through the barrel of the pen has haunted UmValli Lowenthal all through his adult life. His relentless desire to express himself on the literary stage has led him to share with the world, his first book of poems, “Cry of the Re-Awakened Child”.
