Chapter Two

The Ageless Wisdom
As Hieroglyph

Metaphorically speaking, the first hieroglyphic book is nature, for it macrocosmically depicts a universal process at work in the Cosmos which, self-actualizing, creates an atom as it does a star.  Nature is God’s hieroglyph, for the outer symbolizes the inner.

The second hieroglyphic book is man, for man is made in God’s image and, as such, microcosmically reflects the macrocosmic process, or as the ancient hermetic philosophy put it, “as above, so below.” Therefore, whatsoever we may state of God may also be asserted about man, and conversely, whatever we may observe in man, may be posited of God; only the degree differs.  Throughout this book, we shall make a constant effort to keep this philosophy in mind and, consequently, search above and below for the significant correspondence to the principles we are discussing, for as Madame Blavatsky said, “Analogy is the surest guide to the comprehension of the hidden teachings” (The Secret Doctrine).

The third hieroglyphic book is the Ageless Wisdom, for it captures, in symbolic form, the principles of the Cosmic Process... the Plan that has guided and sustained the spiritual evolution of all life forms since the dawn of creation.  Under close scrutiny there may be seen vague, shadowy images of countless titles that have adorned its cover down through the ages.  Its forms of expression have been many, but its copyright may be found only in the Universal Mind..  Ownership of its Divine content has been claimed by many, though it belongs to no man and yet to each and all.

As we leaf through its pages, there unfolds before our eyes an eternal drama of such breathtaking beauty and majesty that all the literature of the world, fiction and nonfiction, cannot duplicate its exquisiteness.  It is the Book of Life.  It tells of a universal scheme, woven in one piece, stretching back into the dark and distant past, and reaching forward into a future of unimaginable splendor.  Its stage...the vast grandiose, multi-form, though uniform, Cosmos.  The cast...every single and collective life form that has ever, could ever, or is now playing its part in the universal melodrama.  The time...eternity.

Powerless though we may be to comprehend the infinite facets of this magnificent drama, let us now boldly venture forth to explore the Divine Mystery, bearing in mind that words can only hint at truths that extend beyond the petty machinations of the human mind.
