She kissed her father on the forehead and told him that she loved him. Then she flung open the door and found herself at the mercy of violent mother nature. The tide was almost high, and the pounding of the surf was louder and closer than before.
With its tiny pieces of ice, the wind attacked Janine as she worked her way through the snow away from the car and up the road.
One step at a time she said to herself, “Twenty-seven, twenty-eight, twenty-nine--”
The wind kept pushing her small body, and she was terrified as she felt herself being blown up against the guardrail. She also thought this was good because she had something to hang onto.
One hundred she counted and thought to herself that she was about a quarter of the way there. She would twist and turn every few steps to escape from the punishing wind. She tasted the salty ocean as she started to breathe more heavily.
At a hundred and fifty steps and she started to get very tired. Her clothing was drenched and her feet were getting cold.
It seemed like forever that she was out there. I can do this she kept on saying. I have to do this.
Two hundred steps and she rested for a moment. The ocean was getting louder and she thought she heard running water. Fog, rain, sleet, snow, ocean mist all prevented Janine from seeing how far along the road she had gone.
“I know these calculations are right. Dad is never wrong.”
She pulled herself along the guardrail, which was getting more slippery with each step.
“Two hundred and fifty!” She said. “Now it’s all downhill.”
Three hundred and seventy-five the count was. She had blocked out the sounds of the night. Her only focus was on five hundred. Then chillingly a wave crashed nearby and icy, deadly, cold ocean water grabbed her by the ankles.
Fear struck Janine. Her heart started pounding. She wanted to cry-- hoping that this was all a dream. She started to think about a news story she saw on TV last winter. This guy was standing on a jetty during a storm and a wave knocked him into the ocean. There were all kinds of spectators and people near him, but no one could save him. They found him three days later.

About the Author
John Cecca Jr. grew up in East Boston and survived a strict Salesian Catholic high school education during the late sixties. A graduate of the University of Massachusetts he went on to teach and later work at Logan International Airport in various capacities. Currently he is a self-employed real estate title examiner. Along the way he has continued his writings. His recently released chapbook of poems POETICALLY UNCONSCIOUS has seen several of his works published in SKYLINE a literary magazine.
