(From the Bride) Finding
a caterer.
June 22.
Most of our friends are amazed by the
devotion that Gary and I have to, well, food.
We love eating, cooking and anything related to food, and actually spent
one Friday night eagerly viewing our new Cuisinart’s
instructional video.
Which is why
our number one reception priority was, of course, the food. We furiously scribbled hors d’oeuvres notes
on cocktail napkins at friends’ weddings, and endlessly dissected the relative
tenderness of every entrée consumed.
And, of course, we wanted the food at our wedding to be “different,” in
a very chic and exotic kind of way. This, I’m sure, made us number one on every
caterer’s hit list. Since every couple
getting married is highly annoying, you can imagine how bad it was. We went to appointments armed with Food &
Wine recipes for the chef to prepare, demanded extra tastings,
and actually devised our own Appetizer Ranking System. We were lucky: We found a great caterer who
prepared exquisite food, did everything possible to accommodate our whims, and
only charged twice as much per head as a five-course dinner at The Four
Seasons.
(From
the MOB) The menu has been decided?
June
24.
The
entrees have been determined: Pepper
crusted Salmon filet with a light Pesto Cream Sauce, and Crispy Roast Duckling
with a Raspberry Sauce. Whatever
happened to having a normal meal like beef tenderloin? What are my relatives going to eat? Oh well, with 17 appetizers, I’m sure they’ll
find something. On second thought, the
appetizers are extremely non-traditional, too.
We’d better arrange for extra baskets of rolls.
(From the bride) Way over budget.
June 26.
I should have seen it coming. I wasn’t a
math major, but all those big numbers had to add up eventually. Today I realized with a shock that the
combined cost of the room, caterer, band, photographer, and my dress now
accounted for exactly 102% of the money my parents gave us. There’s no mistaking that negative sign at
the bottom of my Excel spreadsheet.
Hmmm, what to do…I rack my brains to remember if there is a florist in
the family. Does anyone who owes me a
favor do calligraphy?
