Sera didn''t plan to die when she got out of bed today. But every part of her body screamed that she was dying. Blood oozed from her head. Her body was discarded on the tile floor like a rag doll.
She remembered she had just packed her luggage and was ready to go for her first adult venture alone. She planned to visit the Princess Hotel and board the Casino Cruise to "Nowhere."
Without trying, and at no expense, here she was - nowhere Loser Single, with a void in direction and definition now that she was forced into early retirement and the empty nest syndrome with her son securely engrossed in college and dating.
Her daughter was professionally happy and emotionally out of touch.
It was time for Sera to begin to nurture herself as well as she had nurtured her children and two husbands.
Standing alone without a hand to hold became more and more frightening everyday. She tried marriage twice with traumatic results, and then "careful" dating where she would not have to play the role of "submissive wife." None of this worked.
Her latest career ended just a little too early. It was time for true self-evaluation and reinvention.
It had only been one month since she drove Mark to college. The reality that she left herself and her needs out of this day that she and her children planned so carefully was like a cruel joke.

About the Author
Marcia J. Bowman is owner of a business solutions company and serves as a Blue and Gold Officer for the United States Naval Academy. She has a B.A. in Applied Behavior Sciences and has completed George Washington Extension Program Management Institute Masters Certificate courses. Marcia has been a news reporter for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Austin American-Statesman, Columbia Flier and Howard County Times. She is author of a play, “The Morilogue of William W. Wannabe,”, poetry and children‘s literature, “Chaka Learns the Rules.” She has one daughter, Leslie, a first grade teacher and a son, Matthew, a Midshipman at the U.S. Naval Academy. This first novel, “The Last Miserable Day,” begins a series about Sera‘s triumphs and obstacles as a daughter, wife, mother and professional. Sera’s Stand is planned for publication by the Spring of 2004.
THE ORIGINAL COVER ART, “Winter” is a watercolor painting is provided by permission of David C. Ruffin, Jr., the author’s father. Mr. Ruffin began watercolor paintings as a hobby at age 86 two years before his untimely death in December of 2003. Because of his wisdom and charisma, Mr. Ruffin was fondly called “Dad” by a multitude of young and old adults across the country.
