About the Book

John Henry MacDonald was born into abject poverty and despair. He was blessed with two traits that would lift him from his low station-he was smart and he was tough. He learned early in life that you did not depend upon or place your trust in others. He made a pact with society in that he would obey its laws, at least the ones he considered important, if it would ignore him. Exploited by some and helped unselfishly by others he was able to achieve a modest degree of success early in life.

Feeling the need to be a part of something, he enlisted in the Army. Although he did not violate his pact, disaster struck indirectly providing him with a secret fortune. His station in life was assured until he agreed to help someone. That decision proved to be fatal.
