quality, are comparable to people and good wine both of which improve with age

Art created in the 19th and early 20th centuries as
examples. They were less fascinating

by one. They are becoming scarcer in
the Art market and when available they command six figure prices.
The key to success in Fine Art collecting is to buy
as many of the works of your favourite artists that you can afford or collect
from artists of a given period or school.
Style, quality and medium vary from one school and era to another.
Buy much into the Old Masters if you find them and
can afford their prices. Otherwise, if
you are buying contemporary works consider all works of art rendered in the
traditional styles and medium especially if you buy with investments at the
back of your mind.
There has been a barrage of criticism against modern
and conceptual arts lately. Some people
describe such art as pretentious and hollow rubbish, tart and that these are a conspiracy
among certain individuals and institutions to force conceptualism on people in
Britain especially. Some others allege that
the art is craft less tart, all hype and frequently of no substance and
self-indulgent.
Tastes in collecting art is just like palate in
drinking and they do change. In future,
collectors may embrace conceptualism as they do to the traditional Old
Masters. Remember that Impressionism was
also frowned upon in its early days but later became sought after by
collectors. But as for the moment,
collect only the Old
Masters and Contemporary works that are created in
the traditions of Old Masters, i.e. where images are recognisable and are
visually meaningful.
