About the Book
Captain Bill and “Admiral” Clare set sail in their yacht-home, Fortress Cove for a seven-year ocean voyage. In Blue Water Odyssey Bill recalls some of the highlights of that 50,000 statute mile adventure. Each of the twenty chapters and forty-seven sub chapters briefly recounts events that range from bizarre to humorous; from terrifying to x-rated; from informative to foolish; and from depressing to exhilarating.
Some who dare to dream of visiting faraway places under a spread of sail may be enticed to do the deed themselves; some will be rewarded by vicariously joining them in their travels; and some will content themselves with the realization that they have wisely chosen to avoid the vicissitudes of Neptune’s Realm in the safety and comfort of air travel and motoring on expressways.
This is not a “Ho-hum” type of book. The author has attempted to present the best, the worst, and the most wonderful events that punctuated the odyssey of Fortress Cove. The sea has many, many more of such events awaiting those who choose to live the challenge.
About the Author
Bill, a fourth-generation Texan, grew up far inland in landlocked Amarillo. His Navy enlistment at age 17 introduced him to the oceans he grew to love. He was always drawn to any water-oriented adventure, from scuba diving to designing, building and owning marinas on inland lakes.
Sailing his 22' sloop out of his lake Meredith Marina in the Texas Panhandle caused Bill's passion for sailing vessels to grow. In 1976 his longing to be part of the seagoing world could no longer be denied. Fortress Cove was constructed in California where his love affair with ocean voyaging was consummated.
Bill's natural wit and
Texas-friendly manner made him a well-known part of the yachting community and
opened doors to the intimate events recounted in Blue Water Odyssey
The Bradens have vowed to never again live more than an hour's drive from the sea. They now enjoy the tranquility of their home in the middle of their citrus orchard in the tip of Texas.
