Get It!

Connect with what you are currently doing, and ask if it is what you should be doing or what you desire to do.   Your career should be a very personal thing.  And, if the word passion is anywhere in the decision, that is a good thing.  You will not be as productive as you can be, as successful as you can be, as self-fulfilled as you can be, or as happy as you can be, if you are performing a job just for the money or just because you have the intellect to do so.  You also cannot perform at the whim of someone else.  Because there were three generations of doctors, lawyers, cashiers, bartenders, or whatever in your family is no reason for you to become any of those things. You cannot follow your path because it is what mom or dad want, or your mentor wants, or your love partner thinks you should.  You MUST follow your own personal footprint.  People at whom we can look, and identify as successful, have something in common.  They garnered a relationship with their inner self, and acted upon the gifts they found within. 

If you haven’t found your passion, and you are feeling like “Jack of all trades, master of none”(or master of many), then follow your best instincts in your job and educational planning.  Follow the direction you feel will be useful and logical.  Job security is a thing of the past. Gone are the days of being a loyal worker for 20 to 40 years and walking off with great retirement benefits and a gold watch; the era of downsizing has taken care of that.  If you think that somewhere such security still exists, you are in denial, and it will just prohibit you from taking charge of your career.

Your responsibility to yourself is to be diligent in maximizing the opportunities at hand to enable your personal career progress.  Seize every opportunity to learn new skills. Even if you don’t consider yourself a “techno” person, learn at least the basic technology or computer software utilized in places or jobs that would be viable for your employment.  Whatever skills you have from school or previous employment, upgrade them if training is available. Whether you are pursuing your passion, or working in a field for other reasons, realize that the job does not define who you are.  Look at your job or career as an opportunity to expand your employment base.  Because you might have a particular job or area of responsibility, does not mean you must to stay in that capacity until you are laid off, or recognized for promotion.  Look around the company and see what else it can offer you.  Consider what other things you might be able to pursue, or what else you might be capable of doing.
