Then someone offered me a small used computer, one of the old models that had been replaced by newer technology several years earlier. Bob helped me set it up and, following the instructions in the owner’s manual, I tried to write a letter. Every time I hit the enter key, the screen responded with, “Press play on cassette.” There was a port for a floppy disc; none for a cassette player. I could get nothing more, so, in frustration, I called Bob for help. He came over, checked everything, then sat down with a pad of paper and wrote his own program, typed it into the computer, and proceeded to write a letter to me, containing the program, so I could use it in the future. What a good friend he is. The electronic marvel liked him. After he left, I carefully entered his program again and touched the enter key. “Press play on cassette” read the screen. Several more attempts brought the same result. That ì#*$*$*#î thing hated me. It had a mind of its own!
The piquant smell of pine trees in the cool of a summer morning, the stillness of a warm afternoon in a grove of giant redwoods far from the sound of traffic, the silence of a mountain top in the high Sierras. These are the peaceful memories of camping.
The restful joy of sleeping at the ocean on the high tide line. Listening to the crash of waves on the rocks, and the call of seagulls winging overhead. A campfire cooking our dinner buried in hot coals, roasting hot dogs and marshmallows at dusk watching the sparks fly upward with the collapse of a burning log, and singing songs after dark. These are the happy memories of camping that cemented our family.

About the Author
Harry Newman is a retired cantor with thirty four years of spiritual leadership in two Southern California congregations. In 1990, he was cited Exemplary Teacher by the Orange County Bureau of Jewish Education. Cantor Newman’s many years of teaching both children and adults, have helped develop his unusual awareness of life.
Harry’s genuine love of people, always reflected in his classes, had a major impact on many of the lives he touched during his years in the pulpit. His vocal interpretations of the liturgy, gave his Sabbath and holiday services a special spirituality. This book weaves a spell on the reader, who will find its fascinating vignettes, evoking warmth and emotion, making it easy to identify with Harry’s experiences.
