About the Book
The focus of this book is threefold: one, to
evaluate college campus safety and security procedures; two, to examine
potential behavior patterns of the college students which allow predators to
target and victimize you as a college student, and three, to provide you the
step-by-step guides necessary to live safely as a college student. As you read
through the chapters, you will learn to detect the common threads that connect
victims and criminals, or predators, as
I will address them. Unfortunately, it is a fact of life that college opens windows
of opportunity for criminals to commit crimes. You are going to learn how to
close those windows here. I will share with you true stories of crimes that
have been committed against college students; we will analyze how the
opportunity arose for the crime to occur and seek out solutions to prevent it
from occurring again. As these stories are told, solutions will become more
apparent, and you will become a more safety conscious individual. I will also
provide applicable web sites for additional information on specific topics.
College life offers endless opportunities to expand
your mind and nurture your soul. To take full advantage of all that college
offers, you need to live in peace and safety. The ability to distinguish
between safe and unsafe living conditions and to acquire the needed skills to
have control of your own personal safety will significantly decrease your
chances of becoming a victim of crime, whether it is having your bicycle stolen
or something more serious, such as personal assault. Also, if a criminal does
target you, the individual choices and abilities you bring to that situation
can have a major influence on how you survive that attempt. Enhanced awareness
of your environment, knowledge of how criminals operate, and methods of
ensuring your personal safety are the tools that you need to become a more
safety conscious person. Let us begin!
