About the Book

Vessels of Clay offers the reader a spiritual aeneid. It begins with the author’s early years in New York City, his Catholic schooling, his love of baseball, his first girlfriend, and his first full-time job, on Wall Street. Something, however, is missing in his life, and he accepts a Jesuit’s invitation to try the priesthood.

Donaghy came through the seminary in the 1950s, as did many of those today accused of pedophilia. He gives us a first-hand look at seminary life and speculates on the causes so many priests became pedophiles. As a seminarian, he also worked at the National Training School about the time Charles Manson was incarcerated there, and he reflects upon the problems inherent in our prison system.

Once ordained, he taught high school, served in New York parishes and as a hospital chaplain until he found that the priesthood and religious life were not for him the best way to spiritual and psychological growth. The memoir never denigrates priests or religious. At times humorous, at times poignant, it shows us that priests are but vessels of clay. The Church asks them to be more than human and, in doing so, too often makes them something less.

About the Author

Born in New York City, Henry Donaghy entered the seminary in 1950. Eight years later he was ordained a priest. He then taught high school for three years, served in New York City parishes, and also as a hospital chaplain for several years. In 1966 he petitioned Rome to leave the priesthood.

Dr. Donaghy received his Ph.D. in English literature from New York University, taught in several universities and wrote four books of literary criticism, as well as a number of scholarly articles. Memphis Magazine awarded his short story, "The Consoler," first prize for fiction in 1996. Professor Donaghy was granted a Fulbright lectureship to teach at Damascus University (Syria) in 1979-1980. He currently resides in Las Vegas, Nevada.
