About the Book

The Netherlands is a civilized country. Differences are settled in a civilized manner. Crime is battled with integrity by an independent, competent police force in an incorruptible justice system. Right? Forget it! Puppet Show introduces the ugly truth: top business people who find extortion acceptable; prejudiced, incompetent police officials who lead investigations they do not understand; a prosecutor who manipulates the US Justice Department into kidnapping, lies to and about Canadian officials, withholds evidence, and falsifies extradition and legal assistance requests; and judges who give it all their blessing.

Respected businessman Gerry de Klerk mingled with cabinet ministers, Prime Ministers, presidents and members of the Dutch Royal Family, until Dutch police branded him a master swindler. He could have proved his innocence quickly, but police and prosecutors were not interested in the truth. After a brutal arrest, ten days in California’s Alameda County Jail, seven months behind bars in Amsterdam, and eight years under investigation, de Klerk has finally won.

He has been completely exonerated, and now he fights back not only with a record damage claim, but also with something that police, the Justice Department and some top business people may find even worse – this book, which exposes it all.

Peter Smolders is a well-known Dutch investigative journalist and documentary television producer with a regular show in the Netherlands that exposes fraud. On October 15, 2002 his documentary special about the book Puppet Show aired on Dutch national television. The book has been well received and is already causing quite a stir within the Netherlands where many legal scholars and lawyers give it great reviews.

An English documentary is in production, and a movie is currently in development.

About the Author

Peter Smolders is an experienced investigative journalist in the Netherlands specializing in fraud. He is a freelance writer and the producer of a TV series entitled Opgelicht (Defrauded) exposing fraud. He has been able to capture the essence of this story with his incisive and humorously sarcastic writing style.

Gerry de Klerk is the subject of this story. Through his ability to convey and document the facts in this case, the book was given a solid foundation. De Klerk is not a published author but has written enough material in his replies to the Dutch police complaints to fill more than one book. Both he and Peter Smolders have a similar writing style.
