There is a contemporary application in this lesson. To appreciate it, one only needs to make a simple adjustment. Moses asked to share leadership. What he was asking for was - Democracy.
Moses in his spirit yearned for a democratic rule, a sharing of leadership. That was commendable. Unfortunately, as it turned out neither Eldad, Medad nor seventy elders were ready for it. Humanity was not going to be ready for it until the Advent of Christianity.
History attests that all democracies (even representative democracies) had deteriorated into dictatorships. Our founding fathers did not think this Republic would survive two decades. It did, largely due to Christian morality. The notion of government "of the people, for the people and by the people", is a very Christian notion. The Bible calls it the "Royal Priesthood". Under the leadership of Jesus Christ, every believer is a Royal Priest, a highly moral and self-conscious aristocrat, ready willing, and able to participate in all facets of government affairs.
Christianity, like a strip of fabric softener or a pinch of salt, spreads morality into every corner of society insuring maximum freedoms for the citizenry. When Jesus spoke about the salt he pointed to Christian morality, which is based on the Ten Commandments. Unfortunately, Christianity has nailed the Ten Commandments to the cross. Without the salt of Christian morality society is rotting inside out, sinking into superstitious atheism, spineless pluralism, sexual immorality, and violent lawlessness.
Since the Christians rejected the Ten Commandments, society had thrown them out of their Courthouses. Since the Christians rejected the Ten Commandments, society is fornicating on the steps of Universities, Churches, and Capitols. Since the Christians do not identify themselves with the God of the Ten Commandments, society is losing its identity.
This loss of identity is spreading rapidly. Yesterday there were only African-Americans and Mexican-Americans. Today there are also Lebanese-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Japanese-Americans, Philippine-Americans, etc. What would be next, Dallas-Americans? Los Angeles-Americans? This is schizophrenia on a national scale, a country without personality, society without identity.
As lawlessness in society increases, Government is forced to take freedoms from citizens in return for their safety. Recent passage of the PATRIOT and Homeland Security Acts reveal a dangerous trend of power consolidation at the executive level. As people become disenfranchised, government is further consolidated in the hands of the ruling economic/political elite. The Constitution is being subverted. Soon, Big Brother, with the help of mass media will control not only the legislative, executive, and judicial branches, but also religion.
Finally, there may come a time when a Charismatic leader like Jessie Jackson will be elected president, perhaps even by the Supreme Court. In a gesture to his supporters, a man like that may in fact be able to introduce a Babylonian type of government-sponsored religion (Revelation 13:18).
It would take another book to examine the prophetic inevitability of the Antichrist. This exposition simply highlighted how charisma and ungodliness against the backdrop of lawlessness led to the appearance of shady characters like Eldad and Medad. With that in mind, Joshua’s response becomes obvious.
Numbers 11:28, "And Joshua the son of Nun, the servant of Moses, one of his young men, answered and said, my lord Moses, forbid them."
To picture Joshua’s response, one must imagine the confusion and chaos at the Tabernacle when the Spirit descended: some people began speaking in tongues, others prophesied in loud voices, some rolled around naked in the dust, others engaged in peculiar and bizarre activities; something out of a Woodstock Concert, psychedelic and macabre.
The messenger also indicated that a rebellion was brewing in the camp. In all this fog and confusion, Joshua was the only one who retained his wits about him.
In fact his response was very appropriate. All he said in paraphrase was, "Moses give me the word and I will crush this rebellion."
