A Simple Plan to Your Dress Code

The definition of bouncing colors means to pick colors from one area and "bounce" them across a second color to another area. For example, you could bounce a color from a sweater to the shoes, from earrings to necklace to belt, or from scarf to belt to shoes. Other combinations will be covered later in this chapter.
Bouncing colors ads flair and style to any outfit for both men and women. It dresses up that outfit and makes it seem complete. This is the system used by all fashion designers.
By bouncing colors you balance the focal points of your outfit so that the eye moves from one point to another. It’s like playing a game. You can divide the sections that you want to move to and bounce two, three or four colors to create a visual balance.
Counting Colors/Bouncing
Decide first how you intend to dress: formal, semi-formal, sporty or flashy. This determines the number of colors in your outfit. As described in chapter one; formal=1 color, semi-formal=2 colors, sporty=3 or 4 colors, flashy=5 or more colors.
Jewelry (silver, gold or pearl) does not count as a color yet, when jewelry is bounced, it adds to any outfit.
Next, divide the body into three sections:
1st—Head and neck
2nd—Middle (Subdivide into upper and lower half, or torso and hips)
3rd—Legs and feet
Use jewelry or accessories in each area to both balance and bounce.
Women: For women, the upper one-third (head and neck) includes such accessories as earrings necklace, scarf, glasses and hat. The middle third (torso and hips) includes blouse, sweater, jacket, skirt or pants, handbag, belt and buckle, bracelet, gloves, handkerchief, cloth flowers, buttons, pins or emblems and braid. The lower third (legs and feet) includes hose and shoes.
Earrings, necklace, scarf, bracelet, belt and buckle, handbag and scarf become especially important in bouncing. Silver and gold jewelry and pearls add style to a formal outfit. For sporty or flashy outfits, consider picking up one or two colors in the earrings. A scarf can pick up and bounce one, two or three colors. Since there are over 40 ways to tie a scarf, it becomes an important fashion accessory. Jewelry, scarves, handbags, shoes and other accessories will be covered in complete detail in chapter five.

Introduction
About twenty years ago I began speaking at beauty shows for my family. At the time I used overhead slides a lot. I knew that seeing and hearing is a double process of learning. We would talk about colors and how they should look and dress. The first thing I noticed was the next year they would come to the show they would look entirely different, even if they had tennis shoes on. It was amazing.
Soon as time went on my husband was president of the Beauty and Barber Institute of America and I found myself in charge of taking care of the ladies in the national group. It was such fun I spoke on every subject I had studied.
One day the board of the Institute told me they had hired Dr. Ruth, she was delightful. She had me pass out cards and the ladies were to ask questions about sex. I thought oh dear me. It was at that time Dr. Ruth ask me if I would read the questions and I did. After the meeting I said, "Dr. Ruth can I keep those cards?" I wanted to show them to my husband. She turned to me and abruptly and said, " Honey, you can’t have those cards, that’s my next book." A light went off in my head and I wrote this book, Secrets of Counting Colors.

Many people look to designers and so did I. I really wanted to know what they were thinking and how to create it. My first encounter with a designer was Mr. Blackwell. My husband was still President of the Beauty and Barber Institute; they let me choose a hotel for our luncheon. I choose the Beverly Hills Wilshire where they filmed the movie Pretty Woman. It was beautiful and decorated all in pink. Our speaker was Mr. Blackwell the famous designer. He asked for ten women from my group and I was one. He came over to me and asked what size are you? I told him I was a fat size eight. He said he had never heard of that. He yelled put her in a size six. I was shocked. He sent me in the back room and a man came up and wanted me to take my clothes off. I said I don’t think you understand, I’m from Kansas and we don’t do things that way. They answered, "Honey just face the wall and it won’t matter. When I went on stage I was in a beautiful black and white shirt and Mr. Blackwell gave me the suit. What a nice prize, my curiosity seemed to get stronger and stronger. Designers do not give you the secrets of their success but I do in the book Counting Colors.
One of my rules is generally not to buy sale clothing, soon you find out you have a closet full of clothes that don’t go with any of your other clothes.
Use a game plan when you shop, by counting colors. Color doesn’t have a price tag. This is one thing I have learned. A name brand usually stays in the same shades in the total line. Many blacks, reds all match when you purchase the same brand name. You will save money when you know where you are going. Whether it is a ship or a country club it will work for you.
