Home Sweet Home At the edge of the world facing
Both Images of the past pierce my eyes
the day of deliverance
I sit and stare into the eyes of
nothing wondering
if the end is going to be more
seductive than the idea of survival.
It is a wondrous thing that we go on living,
silently fighting a ghostly enemy,
all the while we are being blinded to the
true issue of what is more important,
winning or appearing
victorious in the face of destruction.
I am eons away from the ground-breaking
reality of what is to become of us.
It may be many years before
I see first hand the true grit of this country.
So I sit in an American swing and sway in the
breeze watching my flag flutter in
the wind and think that there is
no place I’d rather be.
pushing through thoughts of
inferiority and inadequacy.
Not knowing if the chosen path was
paved with strength or cowardice,
I try to drown myself in
wishes of what will never be.
Not because I wish to be there but because
impossible dreams once were.
There is a flicker of hope,
sitting next to reality is an
image of a less than perfect moment.
It has every virtue I wish to
possess in the span of my lifetime.
This moment lasted less than a
heartbeat and longer than a blink.
It was long enough to realize that
Dreams do come true,
Compassion is not a myth,
Heroes do show themselves, and
People will step aside to make the
Impossible possible.

Susan Deckowitz is a native of Des Plaines, Illinois. She has been writing poetry for over ten years, publishing her first poem in an anthology in the late 1990s. She has written two plays, one of which was produced at Millikin University in Decatur, IL where she received her Bachelor of Fine Arts in Design and Technical Theater. She has worked as a property artisan for theater companies in Chicago, IL, Santa Maria, CA, Vero Beach, FL and Buffalo, NY. Susan has participated in fundraising and charity work in support of the fight against breast cancer in memory of Wendy Larks, and others who are and have battled this devastating disease. Susan was honored and privileged to assist the Survivors of the Shoah in their efforts to document and record the life stories of Holocaust survivors. Susan is now working as a studio photographer while using her spare time to explore the vast wonders of man and nature through her camera lens.
