Moments in Time

Plants move their beautiful bodies
With as much purpose as we
But in a slow deliberate way
Busy man is unable to see.

Searching roots burrow deep into earth
Seeking sustenance for a lofty pine.
They struggle in a sometimes hostile world
Much like yours and mine.

Stems and twigs, blossoms and leaves
Adapt to each moment of change.
When one is intimate with nature
These events no longer seem strange.

If you and I could acknowledge the soul
That exists in each living thing
Then shrubs, vines, flowers, trees...
All of life would have a reason to sing.

Aristotle believed plants have souls,
Darwin spoke of it too.
Goethe agreed about the soul of a seed.
What I say here is nothing new.

It is time for humanity to recognize
Each living thing as part of God's plan.
The greatest threat our world faces
Is the destructive nature of man.

OUTCAST

A young bird falls from the nest,
Pushed out by a greedy brother.
He huddles there, amid tangled weeds,
Fearfully calling his mother.

A few more days of parental care
And his wings would cleave the sky
But the weak are often made victims,
Rejected before they can fly.

THE SEA

Albatross glide on sturdy wing
Above an emerald sea
While below the surface whales sing
An unknown melody.

Turtles lay plastron eggs of white
On some wind-swept sandy shore
Concealed by a pitch black night
Then return to the sea once more.

Oceans are mother to the earth,
Womb of a vibrant world
Where biogenesis found its birth
And the gamut of life unfurled.

From microscopic minerals
To megamolecules
To cells pulsating with life
In warm tidal pools.

There would be no evolution,
No defining family tree
Without that salty soup
Man calls the sea.
