"We’re getting married," Jim said, as he held Mitchelle’s hand. The sparkle of her diamond ring made Phillip sick to his stomach with envy. Phillip watched both of them in disgust as Jim continued to tell him of their engagement.
"Phil, aren’t you happy for us?" Phillip’s eyes remained sternly focused on Mitchelle, before he finally confronted Jim.
"Just why in the hell should I be happy for you! Huh!" Phillip continued to stare Jim down.
"I thought we had an understanding Jim. Never go after Mitchelle, remember? You know we both have feelings for her. You know that . . . "
"That agreement was made over two years ago Phil, things change!"
Ten years past since that day. Ten years and it all seemed like it happened yesterday. Phillip never forgot that day. He continued to stand there, arms folded as the sun shined brightly through his office window that cool, September morning. He had only been the manager at that restaurant since the winter of the previous year, but he managed other restaurants for the same company in different cities.
Ten years, and the anger, the betrayal, the hurt and resentment still linger on. He remembered hearing about the wedding from other friends. How beautiful Mitchelle looked in her white, lacy wedding dress. How happy Jim was. He frowned even more as he thought about their happiness. He slowly walked towards his desk but before he sat down, he remembered the day before the wedding.
"I thought we were best friends, Jim," Phillip said, looking sternly at him. The two stood in the middle of the living room in Jim’s small apartment.
"Why are you two doing this?"
"I love Mitchelle. Why can’t you just be happy for us?"
"I care a lot about her too, friend!" Phillip said, pointing at him. "But we both agreed to never go after her," he shouted!
"Oh will you come off that shit Phil! Damn!" Jim threw his hands in the air. His light gray eyes burned with anger. Not at Phillip, but because of the pact the two made a few years earlier.
The two turned to face each other. No one said a word. They just stared at each other.
"Well since we’re getting things out in the open, you might as well know everything," Phillip paused as he stared into Jim’s eyes.
"What are you talking about," he shouted!"
"Your bride to be is no damn good . . . "
"She was with me the night before you two announced your so called, happy engagement," Phillip said, stopping Jim just as he began to approach him.
"You’re lying! You’re a lying, jealous . . . "
"Ask her Jim, well, she wouldn’t tell you anyway but . . . "
"Get out Phil," Jim shouted, lunging at him. Phillip stood there, stiffened from shock.
"I’ve known you my entire life," Phillip said, pointing at Jim, "and I can’t believe you’re choosing this lying bitch over your own cousin."
"Half cousin," Jim said, gritting his teeth. "Now get the hell out of here before I . . . "
Phillip stood there, staring at Jim and shaking his head in disgust.
"I’ll never forgive you for this," Phillip said, still staring at Jim, "I wish nothing but the worst for both of you. You’ll regret you ever did this," he said, slamming the door.
