And the reading room was Moonbeam’s lair. A closet of a room in the back of the store with a cascade of rainbow colored beads at the door. In the center of the room stood a rickety wooden table with two white resin chairs on either side, the diviner and the divined. Each day, the room was cleansed with the acrid, pot-like smell of sage, which attacked the air with its heaviness and gave Mantra its "purple haze" feel. Occasionally, when stocking books close to the reading room or dusting the nearby African fertility figurines, I’d hear part of Moonbeam’s reading. I wouldn’t eavesdrop exactly . . . . Okay, so I would eavesdrop, but I felt justified, being hungry for knowledge, and Moonbeam was a veritable geyser of wisdom. She laid down the cards in a fluid motion. Taking a deep breath and closing her eyes, she silently beckoned guidance from the higher intelligence of the spirit realms. In this state of altered consciousness, the truths would flow. "I see great pain." "Yes," came the wrenching response from the mother of three in jeans, a pink sweatshirt and white running shoes. "A man – your husband." "Yes." More excited now. "You feel like you’re suffocating. He doesn’t understand you." "Yes. Exactly!" "You try to communicate--" Moonbeam looked at the cards with a frown. "He doesn’t get it! I don’t know what to do." The woman sniffed, reaching for a tissue. "Uh huh. Okay. I’m getting a very strong feeling here. It’s something concrete. Something tangible." Moonbeam paused dramatically, closing her eyes and taking a deep breath to grasp the etheric image. "Okay, it’s clearer now. A book. A book of guidance about men and women." "A book. That’s good. I can read as long as it’s not too complicated." "No, not too complicated. It’s something that will make sense to you. You’ll be able to share this book with your husband. He’ll be responsive. It will help the marriage. Help the communication." "I’ll get it. Anything that will help! What is this book? Can you see a name?" "I’m getting a name. It’s sort of otherworldly...males and females from different planets learning to live in harmony." "Oh my God! It’s a sign! My mother was just telling me about Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus!" Her mouth hung open. "That’s the book." Casually, "I’m pretty sure we have it in stock out front." "I’ll buy it!" The woman rose buoyantly from the chair, transformed. "Thank you sooo much, Moonbeam!" she said, stretching her arms out for a quick embrace. "I know you’ve answered my prayers!" She made a last dab at her eyes with the balled tissue. Then, almost as an afterthought, she gave her nose one final blow as if to symbolize that all was well with the universe once again. Moonbeam had just made $30 on her reading, converted another confused patron to her stable of clients, and earned a small commission on the book she’d recommended. Not a bad start to the day.

About the Author
Laura and Lynda Campbell, natives of Michigan, lived in So. California for twelve years where they were invested in soul searching until they discovered there was no money in it. They currently reside in Vermont with their spirit guides.
