About the Book
Correcting Deficiencies in the Basic Skills Grades 4 - 8 is for the experienced educator as well as the neophyte . . . a much-needed resource that provides help for all those who work with children functioning below grade level. Chicago’s public-school children MUST work in grade-level materials. With their needs and those of many other teachers who face the same hurdles, Correcting Deficiencies in the Basic Skills Grades 4 - 8 includes a lesson plan and many more "goodies" especially for them! These include reproducible worksheets in Language Arts, Math, and Geography. All have been designed for and have been successfully used by students who have deficits in the basic skills. The classroom teacher who is often frustrated by time restraints, can use the information, suggested activities, and worksheets without taking a huge bite out of the time needed to meet the demands of the curriculum. Correcting Deficiencies in the Basic Skills Grades 4 - 8 will certainly be a help to those intermediate and upper grade teachers who did not take a methods course in teaching primary reading or math.
About the Author
Nettie Whitney Bailey is the youngest of five children born during the depression on Chicago’s west side to parents who were community-minded educators. After becoming a wife and mother of three, she returned to school with the support of her husband and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from Chicago Teachers College and Northwestern University, respectively. As a retired tutor for Chicago Public Schools, a private tutor in her home, and an educational consultant for DePaul University, all from her bed or wheelchair, she continues to see what teachers and students need.
