HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS FOR STUDENTS WHO CANNOT READ THE GRADE-LEVEL TEXT (See the Appendix for homework assignments to assess or practice particular skills.) MATH Give daily practice on the number facts (If students cannot give answers to addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts as quickly as they respond to, "What is your name?", they need to practice!) Give practice in place value ... reading and writing number names through trillions; underline digits in numerals and have the students identify their values. LANGUAGE ARTS Vocabulary ... Give words from the next lesson to be taught and have the students look them up in the dictionary. Tell them which definitions/meanings you want them to write by identifying the part of speech (noun, verb, etc) that is used in the selection. Have them use the thesaurus sometimes. Give them practice in determining the accuracy of their choice by using the context. Have them replace the word in the context with the meaning they chose and see if it makes sense. Have the students write sentences using the words they looked up in the dictionary or thesaurus. Pronoun practice ... Using selections from their textbooks, identify pronouns and have the students identify their antecedents, the nouns they are replacing. CONSONANT/VOWEL SOUNDS Memory Game. The first person repeats the sentence and fills in the blank with a word that begins with "a". The next person repeats the sentence and fills in the blank with the "a" word and gives a word that begins with "b", etc. throughout the alphabet. Variation. Read one of the sentences, ask a student to fill in the blank, then identify the ending and/or middle consonant(s) and/or vowel(s) sound(s). I went to the grocery store and bought ______________. I went to the zoo and saw ___________. I went to the Jewel/K-Mart/Toys-R-Us and bought__________. I went to the park and saw_____________. I know a person whose name is ____________. I know a job/profession/career that begins with __________. I know the name of a place that begins with___________. I know the name of a thing that begins with___________. I know a verb that begins with __________. I know an adjective that begins with __________. (Use other parts of speech also.)

About the Author
Nettie Whitney Bailey is the youngest of five children born during the depression on Chicago’s west side to parents who were community-minded educators. After becoming a wife and mother of three, she returned to school with the support of her husband and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees in education from Chicago Teachers College and Northwestern University, respectively. As a retired tutor for Chicago Public Schools, a private tutor in her home, and an educational consultant for DePaul University, all from her bed or wheelchair, she continues to see what teachers and students need.
