About the Book

(547 pages)

Gray Ashes Come Winter by Pryor Cosby is a rousing, yet tender, story of a Scot Whig planter in South Alabama during the 1855-1865 era. Chris MacLyndon is a pro-union slave owner who defies the law to nurture and educate his people.

Through his son Matt, a powerful state senator, he fights the secessionist 'rightists,' led by William Lowndes Yancey, a prominent attorney and respected orator. All efforts fail and the Confederate States of America become a separate nation. As family tragedies mount and the war commences, the fiery old Scot not only flaunts the law to increase and protect his wealth, he readies the slaves for their freedom and land ownership.

The novel is not without passion and breathtaking encounters brought on by Laura, Matt's young and beautiful wife from New Orleans. Adding an air of mystique is a striking mulatto, also from New Orleans, whose cunning and sensuousness are overpowering as strange bloodlines emerge.

This intriguing tale of wealth, power, love and war is set in Montgomery, Mobile, New Orleans, Richmond, Havana and London, spanning the most chaotic era in American history.
