As the three of us got into the water, I looked back at the kayaks. We wouldn't be able to take them any further and Mr. Jordan was going to be real mad. We all took several deep breaths and dove under. As we started down the tunnel toward the next cavern, A.J. was having a lot of trouble right off. We were trying to hold on to him and swim. This was taking longer than we had planned. Just as we got about halfway, A.J. started to struggle and we lost our grip on him. He sank down so far I could no longer see him. Dr. Marianne and I dove down as far as we could, but I still couldn't see him. I could feel my lungs getting close to bursting, so I started toward the light.
Just then, something very large brushed past me, swimming fast. I figured the next thing I would feel was a big mouthful of teeth removing one of my legs. Dr. Marianne and I made our way to the next cavern. The water was turning and I could feel something was moving past me back from the other direction. Dr. Marianne came up in the pool and started to scream for A.J. I looked up and, to my amazement, A.J. was sitting on the edge of the pool. Dr. Marianne was gleefully hugging him so tight he wasn't able to talk. Jonathan and Betsy didn't seem to be able to talk, either. So, just what was that big thing that swam by us, and how did A.J. get here so fast? Little by little, the story started to unfold.
"I was sinking down and down in the water," said A.J. "I couldn't hold my breath any longer. I felt something real big come up from under me and lift me toward this cavern. In a second, I was here, above the water and sitting on the edge. I only saw a flash of green and a long tail."
Betsy and Jonathan both started talking at once. "It was huge with a long neck," Jonathan said while holding his arms outstretched.
"Its head is bigger than my whole body," Betsy added. "It has huge black eyes, and A.J. was sitting right between them."

About the Book

About the Author
M. A. Porter was born and raised in New England and spent many happy summers growing up in the shadow of Mt. Monadnock located in southern New Hampshire. Warm, sunny days were spent camping, swimming, hiking and boating at the lakes and rivers that are found in abundance throughout New England.
These experiences together with a background in microbiology enables the author to intertwine interesting medical and scientific facts with an exciting story of adventure.
Wonderful lifelong friends and a closely knit family have influenced the author’s ability to create engaging characters and a fast-paced story with a positive message about the importance of family and friends.
