About the Author

Grandmaster Rodney L. Baumberger, 55, has been in the martial arts for over 27 years. He and his wife, Joni, started in 1984 and opened up Baumberger Karate in 1988 He hold a 7th dan black belt in the art of Tae Kwon Do and was associated with the late D.H. Choi out of Canton, Ohio. He also holds a 5th dan black belt in the full contact art of Bong-Sool. He won 3 state titles in Bong and was once ranked #1 in the nation by the innovator of the sport. Grandmaster Choi. He also won or placed in the kata divisions of Bong. He traveled to Colorado in 1988 and placed 5th in the middleweight division of the A.A.U. Tae Kwon Do nationals. Baumberger fought in 3 nationals and was always in the top ten. Grandmaster Baumberger fought in many types of tournaments, both open hand and Bong, winning some and losing some. His greatest victories were the dedicated students that studied under him along with his wife and his son, Brock. (Brock started formal training at the age of two and cranked out many wins at many tournaments.) Grandmaster Baumberger was inducted in the S.O.M.A. (Society of Martial Artists) in 1996, sponsored by the founder the late Grandmaster Clarence West of . Wintersville, of which is a source of pride for Baumberger. Grandmaster Baumberger is also proud that his son also was inducted in 2004. He retired from fighting at the age of 51 due to a career ending injury. Baumberger Karate is still operating today.
