The big right hand came from out of nowhere, yet seemed to come forward in excruciating slow motion. Fil was able to see the black hair that covered the joints below the knuckles and noted idiotically that there was a small scar, shaped like a crescent moon , on the index finger's knuckle. Then the world turned into a kaleidoscope of bright colors as he was twirled around in a circle from the force of the blow. "Ohs and ahs " were the prevalent sounds from the spectators as he ended the spin on his knees. Looking at the pavement through slit eyes, he marveled at the bright specks of mica that caught the strong rays of the mid afternoon's sun. His wonderment turned to groggy concern when a fat red drop of blood splattered down from his face to dull some of the miniature sunbursts from the reflective mineral. Slowly, he raised his head up towards his tormentor. He gasped, when again in slow motion, he saw the big work boot being drawn back. He tried to make his numb body obey his command and roll out of the way, but his brain was short circuited and refused to issue the proper orders. Surreally, the slow motion of the boot turned into the blinding speed of a meteorite flashing across the horizon and was instantly speeding it's way into Fil's exposed side. The strength of Link Smith became very apparent when the force of the kick "whumppped" Fil Hooper upwards into a shape reminiscent of an inchworm measuring a leaf.

About the Author
Grandmaster Baumberger has been in the martial arts over 25 years. He holds a 6th degree black belt in the open hand art of Moo Do Won Tae Kwon Do and a 5th degree black belt in the full contact sport of Bong-Sool, a form of staff fighting. He won 3 straight state titles in Bong and was once ranked #1 in the nation by the late Grandmaster D.H. Choi, who was the innovator of the sport. Baumberger also won and placed in the Kata division. He took 5th place in the A.A.U. Tae Kwon Do nationals held in Colorado in 1988. Grandmaster Baumberger fought in many types of tournaments, both open hand and Bong, winning some and losing some. He was inducted in the S.O.M.A. Hall of Fame in 1994, sponsored by the late Master Clarence West. He retired from fighting at the age of 51 due to a career ending injury. He and his wife Joni opened Baumberger Karate in 1988 and with their son, Brock, continues to operate it today.
