Moderator: Our play opens in Heaven. Our Heaven is how man might imagine Heaven to
be.
While in the Garden of Eden, Adam
and Eve led an angelic “happy go lucky” life with their only admonition: “Do no eat from the Tree of Knowledge”. Having committed this sin, they no longer
resembled angels. They were now Human
able to recognize either happiness or sadness.
Along with a burgeoning boundless imagination, Men, forever after, gained
the free will to make decisions. Occasionally, the decisions were good but
usually they were bad-very bad.
Ever since Adam and Eve were
expelled from the Garden of Eden, Man has always been fascinated by the
“Unrevealed” – about the nature of Heaven, Angels, Man’s soul, and God. For thousands of years, to prove Man’s sincerity,
came forth all kinds of “isms” and religions.
One or more days each week are devoted to prove the honesty of each
man’s zeal.
The chorus singing:
“Why,
oh, why do you cloud you mind?”
“Closing your eyes in ecstasy.”
“It’s no crime, just be good”
“And understood”
“Without the sake of Fantasy.”
Moderator: Heaven is perfectly white with clouds of
every pastel shade floating among the Seraphim, the Cherubim, and those Souls
who were privileged to be admitted to Heaven.
The Seraphim have three pairs of Golden Wings. The Seraphim are the Angels who rested on the
top of the Ark that the
Israelites carried around the Sinai desert for forty years. The Cherubim are the Angels with white wings
guarding the “Gate of Heaven”.
The Soul is a rather complicated
matter. Any concept of the Soul by man
is so complicated that all we can say is that the Soul separates the living
from the non-living. Thus the Soul
implies that if you were judged by Heaven to have led an exemplary life, you
Soul with its corporal adornment might be admitted to Heaven.
The Kabbalah
tells us that Metatron, a Cherub, was appointed by
God to govern the visible Universe. Metatron has larger white wings to distinguish him from the
other Cherubim.
Our scene opens with Metatron walking along the Boulevard of Heaven. Metatron is visibly
troubled.
In an undertone, but still
audible, the Angel chorus is singing a parody of “What’s the use of worrying”.
Metatron
(talking aloud to himself):
Man is the Crown of Creation-the
reason that God created the visible Universe.
God has placed Man on Earth to be the guardian over all creatures on the
land, in the seas, in the air. For Man’s
survival, God has filled the skies with many edible birds-every need that Man
could ever wish for.
God cleanses the Earth of dead or
dying plants and animals without asking men for any help.
But men have been incessantly
destructive in his relations with other human beings. In addition, he kills animals without reason,
devastates the land, pollutes the seas, and poisons the air. Has Mankind ever done anything right? All of his ambitions come to naught. Why, Why has he
failed? God was almost shaking with
rage. It’s been quite a while since I
have known God to be so angry.
God’s words have filled me with
an admonition that man is falling, falling into an abyss, which he will never
be able to extricate himself.
The Angel Chorus
“What is Heaven like,
With the world as its spike,
Holding upright the tent of Faith
Over the minds of Mortal Man.”
Oh, foolish man
Accepting any useless Faith
Walking Earth, lost in resignation
By the fantasy of adoration.”
Metatron
is strolling down the Boulevard of Heaven when he sees Mr. Snake and the Angel
Gabriel coming from the opposite direction towards the Elysian Café. Gabriel is also a Cherub but he is adorned
only with small white wings. Mr. Snake
is dressed in a superbly tailored Rattlesnake jacket.
Gabriel: Hey, Boss, what’s the matter? I’ve never seen you so agitated. It couldn’t be that there is trouble in Paradise.
Metatron:
God is troubled, very troubled about Man. With all of his efforts to make Man
understand, God has tried endlessly to enlighten men to live in peace with his
neighbors, to care for the widow and the needy.
Man has been given dominion over all the animals and plants. Man should appreciate his obligations in
caring for land and the waters and the skies.
Everything has fallen on closed minds and deaf ears. They’re just deaf, dumb, and blind.
