About the Book
Best friends Oliver and Kallum are two very adventurous and intelligent children aged 9 in year 5, who go to a small village primary school. Oliver is good at English and artistic subjects and is more outgoing, whereas Kallum knows a lot about science and computers. At the start of the Autumn term in August, new year 6 (aged 10 & 11) pupils arrive at the school, of which one is Brandon, a very large, fat boy who causes trouble for everybody. They have to create secret codes to prevent Brandon finding out what they and their friends are doing, which includes playing on a giant rope swing, trying to climb a very tall tree with the clever use of a rope, finding a secret dungeon, and seeing a ghost in the graveyard. As a result, they become very frightened of ghosts, and some of their friends scare them on a ghost hunt. After their tenth birthdays in the middle of November, the weather becomes very cold, rarely getting above freezing, and by early December starts snowing heavily. This prompts even more risky activities like sliding a path in the church yard whilst trying to dodge the vicar, sliding along the frozen canal, sledging down the middle of a steep road hoping to avoid cars, exploring a large tunnel under the canal, and walking over moors in knee deep snow to skate on a tarn. During sledging in a very uneven field, which they were strictly forbidden to go in, discover a tunnel, which is an entrance to an underground bunker. They visit the bunker several times, but on one occasion Kallum accidentally records on his phone a gang of crooks in another bunker room planning a huge robbery. Ghostly sounds are then heard, followed by ghosts moving round the walls, the floor opens up, and dead bodies streaming with blood come alive, they are terrified, and in their extreme haste to escape crash heavily into a wall and end up unconscious. Freezing temperatures down to -17°C were recorded during the night with heavy snow falls gradually blocking the tunnel with no way to get out. Was this their last exciting adventure!
About the Author
Colin Bradford was born England, in the picturesque Yorkshire dales, and loves visiting other beautiful places. At school he focused on maths and science subjects, but loved writing stories, and the occasional free poem. This educational background has led him into a technical career, largely developing new medical products for use in hospitals. Writing for work was very structured, and has to be objective, concise, and completely unambiguous, almost the opposite requirements for a novel. Recently, he has rediscovered his ability to write artistically, hence this novel. This second novel by the author is aimed at children and is a very different genre to his first novel ‘The Release of Time’ which was aimed at adults. The Winter Nightmare is based on a short story written by the author when he was a similar age to the children in this book. Some of the exciting adventures in the book are based on real events.
