Tree-dotted African grasslands teem with beloved creatures like elephants, giraffes, and zebras. But there is more to the landscape than meets the eye. Down in the burrows, a colony of naked mole rats (NMRs), unlikely to win any beauty pageants, lead busy, interesting lives. And just as does any human village, an NMR burrow reflects the different talents, personalities, and aspirations of its residents. Mole rat twins Middee and Maudee are esteemed elders in their colony. But there is one problem. They are bored with burrow life. When curiosity leads them above ground, they have no idea of the danger that awaits. Lizzie is a restless vagabond with two imaginative boys who spend most of their time pondering what might exist outside the burrow, especially airplanes. Darling old Lads from Limerick, devotees of poetry, washed into the burrow during a monsoon and never left. As the burrow grows, the outside world intrudes when scientists from abroad threaten the colony. It’s all-hands-on deck as the NMRs enlist the help from the big creatures above ground and a ravenous python makes an appearance. As disaster lurks everywhere, the destiny of the NMRs seems uncertain. Will they overcome all their challenges? In this entertaining tale, a colony of busy mole rats living in a burrow in Africa face danger and other trials as they explore the world above them.

About the Author

Candee Brown grew up in Southern California and later migrated to the Pacific Northwest. She has always been an avid reader, but began to write more after she retired. In 2018, while walking toward town, the Middee and Maudee characters in her debut novel, Burrow Tales, popped into her mind and never left. Candee lives close to family in a seaside town north of Seattle.
