Emma and Puddles

Mama was reading a book and Emma was looking at the newspaper she had brought from home. Emma couldn’t read much yet, so for now she was happy with just looking at the pictures and recognizing a few words. When she got to the next to the last page, Emma saw a picture of the cutest puppy she had ever seen. “Look!” she yelled to Mama. “That’s it! That’s the puppy I want. What does it say about it, Mama?” Emma asked. Mama read the story about the puppy. It said, “Wanted: A good home for this cute two-month-old puppy. Come to the Washington Street Pet Adoption Center.” “Can we go? Can we? Can we? Please! Please!” Emma begged her mother. “Yes,” Mama replied, “but not until after your swimming lesson is done.” “Okay!” Emma exclaimed. She was so excited that she almost swallowed half of the pool because she was busy talking about her new puppy instead of paying attention to her swimming teacher. As soon as her lesson was over, she dragged Abby to the car so that they could get to the adoption center before anyone else got her puppy.
