The Eye of The Seeker

Sitting alone on the roof of her house, Anna hugged her legs, losing herself out beyond the wall, daydreaming of what it must be like to live out there. This was the place she would come when the world became too much for her, where she could take herself far away from these walls, from these laws she didn't understand, and these people who didn't like her, and imagine a place where anything could be possible. She felt the depression weighing down, doubts of faith and belief creeping upon her, dragging her down, one self-deprecating thought slipping into an even darker, faith-shaking one. Could the Fathers of the past and present be right? Could there honestly be an all-perfect, all-knowing God that watched over her like she had always taught? Was the secret solution to everything to just blindly believe? Even if you had more questions than answers. She dove further into her thoughts, coming to a soul-crushing conclusion. The God of her people had never felt real to her. The harsh truth was that she'd never felt His presence the way the Fathers said she should. She clung tighter to herself as another wave of despair washed over her. She closed her eyes and listened, desperate for a touch, a sign, something, anything sent from above to prove that the God she was supposed to believe in was real. She opened her eyes again, disappointed but not surprised, to find that nothing had changed. She was sitting on the same roof, under the same sun setting sky, with the same feeling of emptiness churning deep within her chest as the tears streamed down her cheeks. She covered her face in shame, hating herself more than she ever hated anything before. Through her fingers, she could see the eye imprinted on her wrist, staring at her. " The eye of the seeker.” She hissed, angrily covering her symbol with her other hand, disgusted by her once thought blessing that set her apart, always looking back at her, always mocking her, always reminding her of how different she was. “I don't want to be a seeker anymore.”
