My 6-year-old granddaughter, Hazel, and I delighted in reading this book! She was hooked after the first two pages. When an orphaned baby hippopotamus arrives at a shelter, several animals greet their new friend amicably, but they wonder why Harriette looks so different from them. She does not have hair, feathers, fuzz, or a mane. Excitement grows among the animal friends when they finally spot a lone hair on Harriette’s tail. The book addresses differences among not only animals, but people, too. Colorful, lively illustrations are used, and genuine dialogue promotes acceptance and helps children realize, “You are just the way you are meant to be!” This book is a keeper!

“Why isn’t Harriette hairy yet?” is my toddlers favorite book. So much so that when we choose it as his book at night he always asks for it to be read twice in a row. He also has to move my fingers while holding the book to make sure he can see all the animals! We love this book. The graphics are beautiful, the story has a good lesson on self awareness, and we also get to learn about many of our favorite animals. I really enjoy the fact that this children's book was written by a vet. Gives me nostalgia from all my favorite books in my youth written by James Herriot. Extra bonus is all of Dr Kelleyerin Clabaugh’s books have animals facts in the back of the book about all the animals you see drawn. Harriet is our favorite book written by Dr Clabaugh, but we have more of her books on our shelf as they are educational, full of imagination, each have important lessons for children, and we get to learn about new and exciting animals! I also love how a portion of the book goes to an important cause. We cant wait for the next one to be published!

Reviews Why isn’t Harriette Hairy yet? Let me start with saying that I LOVED this story written and illustrated by DR. Kelleyerin. Being her sister, one could assume I am biased, bit let me tell you, she has a true talent! The story of Harriette and her struggle to find out why she looks different from the other animals is so well done and is written in a way that young children can relate. It talks about kindness, friendship, learning that each animal can be unique and made to be just who they are. It is a lesson of acceptance and appreciation for our differences but not preachy…. Just a sweet, kind story with fabulous drawings to accompany it

Quilliam Needs a Hug This story had me wanting to reach through the pages and give this sweet little porcupine a hug! Quilliam longs to connect and get a hug, but his sharp quills prevent this. It is not until he learns that exposing your softer side, while making you more vulnerable, will allow others to connect with you. I can easily see young children hearing/ reading this and relating. A great story with a good lesson and wonderful illustrations. Dr. KelleyErin is truly a vet with many talents!!!
