“Eli,” Lola says, “I made you your favorite: Lumpia!” I do love my Lola’s lumpia, but I never thought I would bring this for lunch! What will everyone say if I bring lumpia for lunch? What if I’m the only one with lumpia? What if no one even knows what lumpia is? “Eli,” my Lola says, “I packed this for your daddy’s first day of school, and I’m so excited that I get to see you off to school! So, I made this lunch especially for you.” Well, that settles it: I have to bring this to school because I don’t want my Lola to be upset. But I can see it now… Everyone is going to look at my food and wonder why it looks so weird. They’re going to ask me why it smells, or why I don’t just have normal food. Oh, boy! I don’t know about this!

Eli is a 5-year old boy. He is getting ready for his first day of Kindergarten when he finds out that his Lola (which means grandma in Tagalog) has cooked him lumpia for his school lunch. Eli never thought he would bring Filipino food to his American school, and now he is worried about what his friends at school will think when they see his lunch. How will Eli handle this dilemma?
About the Author
Joseph Aguila is a Filipino-American writer and teacher. Joseph has spent the last decade working in education, and he is now extremely excited for his first published work, Lumpia for Lunch. Having grown up in a Filipino-American home, Joseph often ate Filipino staples, but never brought his mother’s delicious food to school. With this book, Joseph’s hope is to honor Filipino culture through storytelling and delicious food, while also inspiring others to share and celebrate everyone’s lunch.
