Morning broke over the Apache reservation as the sun reflected off First Nation Ridge. The streets were empty, except for an old Apache man who had fallen asleep on a bench with a paper bag in his hand. The sound of a single rooster crowing stirred the silence. It was followed by the rhythmic sound of horse hooves calmly plodding along the main street. The hollow clip clop on the dusty road stopped behind the Quonset hut near an aluminum tank filled with warm cloudy water. The old work horse stood drinking a long while, unaffected by the gruesome body that laid slung over its back, and the bloodied blue-jean-jacket tied to its saddle. Ted was up at his usual time. The regular aroma of coffee filled the campsite, and the crackling of the wood in the fire pit brought back memories of happier camping days. The quiet of the morning was interrupted by the sound of the chief’s tires in the gravel as he turned into their camp. His entrance sounded harsher than usual, and his black SUV slid to a stop on the loose gravel. He got out looking serious, and sullen. “Ted, I am sorry to tell you this, but the Tribal Council voted this morning to revoke the camping permit for your group. They have asked me to direct you to be off the reservation by noon today.”

Just north of Detroit in a 1960’s neighborhood, a group of kids, Ted, Natalie, Mitch, Greg, and Jim make a promise never to reveal how they write their secret messages. As they grow up, they remain friends throughout their lives. They stand up for each other’s weddings and attend the birthday parties of each other’s children. However, on the fiftieth anniversary of having met on Matthew Street, their childhood promise, results in them being recruited by the CIA for a deadly mission which will test their friendships to the breaking point. The CIA has discovered that the pope is missing and has been replaced by an extraterrestrial imposter. However, that is top secret information and only those on a “need to know” basis are privy to it. The U.S. Government cannot be involved, so they enlist a third party to be the face of their operation. The Matthew Street Gang is charged with the task to eliminate the imposter and close the portal above First Nation Ridge in Arizona. But when several people go missing and everything points to the Vatican observatory, three Apache scouts get involved, and the life-long friends must finally recognize the true identity of their enemies or die!
About the Author
Nancy MacDonald is a retired English teacher with a master’s in education and a certification in learning disabilities. Her story, “Christmas Baptism,” was published in Focus on the Family’s, Christmas Anthology; and more recently, “Dad’s Umbrella,” was included in Chicken Soup for the Soul’s, Believe in Miracles edition. MacDonald’s Christian faith is the driving force behind her writing, both fiction and nonfiction. She loves doing research and including Bible prophecy in her plots. And she draws on her passion for camping to help provide her readers with an exciting adventure in the great outdoors.
