As believers, we need the fruit of the Spirit because they help us deal with our fellowman in a genuine, peaceful, and loving manner. I am going to explain each fruit and tell you why it is important. The first quality a Christian should possess is love as stated in Gal. 5:22 and Jn. 13:34-35. A Christian’s life should also be marked by joy, which is being cheerful, calm, delightful, and full of gladness even when bad things are happening around you. For example, bills are due and you don’t know where money will come from to pay them. Common sense would dictate that you get upset and begin worrying which will quickly age you. But God says: “Such love has no fear, because perfect love expels all fear. If we are afraid, it is for fear of punishment, and this shows that we have not fully experienced his perfect love” (I Jn. 4:18) (NLT). This means you are to love God more than your problems or difficulties. Next is peace. The Word of God says: “God will keep you in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on thee because he trusts in thee” (Is. 26:3) (KJV). Therefore, if you say you trust in God but have no peace, you are being fooled by the devil. If God’s Word says it, that is all that needs to be said because it is impossible for God to lie (Num. 23:19). Christians should also exhibit longsuffering. This means we may have to put up with things or people we don’t like. For example, Jesus had to put up with the religious leaders of His day who were constantly trying to find something wrong with Him and what He said. Mt. 9:10-13 states that God is looking for those who need to be healed and delivered from something. As a believer, you should not be concerned about how people talk about you when you minister to prostitutes, drug addicts, sinners or people struggling with something. However, the religious leaders in the Bible couldn’t see it that way. All they could do was act self-righteously and point out what’s wrong. Paul was constantly attacked and ridiculed by others. Paul explained to the Corinthians how he went through much suffering for the furtherance of the gospel (II Cor. 11:22-27).

About the Author
Marvin Watson has been a member of Crenshaw Christian Center in Los Angeles, CA for 28 years. He has been writing almost all of his life. Marvin has been a Christian since the late seventies. This is my second book which contains a series of sermons I have actually taught and lectured on, while being a minister of the Gospel. The church Marvin goes to now is called “Friendly Temple Church of God in Christ”. Some of the churches of the past are: “Assemblies of God” church in Mass., “Pentecostal” church while attending Florida A & M Univ. , as well as extensive studies of the Bible. Currently, Marvin lives in Victorville CA, where he has lived with his wife of fifteen years. Marvin truly loves the Lord and looks for every opportunity to spread the word and make someone happy.
