Just at that time of year between the last singing of the Spring Peepers and the buzzing of the Cicadas, Aurelia Darlington was seated in the gazebo in her garden, where she enjoyed a second cup of black coffee. Between sips, she scanned the morning edition of the State Capital newspaper. She nearly missed an item which announced a lecture the following Wednesday by Dr. George Downs, a guest speaker at St. Hubert University, sponsored by the Department of History. The subject was "United States Diplomacy in South America in the Decades After the Civil War." She reviewed her plans for the following week and debated whether she might travel to the State Capital and attend the lecture, to which the public was cordially invited, but the subject of which would hardly be of interest to anyone but a specialist Latin American affairs. Aurelia was neither a specialist nor a typical member of the general public. Her Great Grandfather Gideon Chase was one of the men of affairs----in the shadowy world of diplomacy at the time when the United States did not have an official intelligence service----She decided to attend the lecture----she had not seen her former lover George Downs----since he received his Doctorate.

About the Book
“Fair Are The Meadows” is the story of three mature single women, cousins, who are descendants of a distinguished ancestor, Gideon Chase. They live in Zenobia, a city in the American Midwest. One of the cousins, Clare Szabo, lives in a mansion built by Gideon Chase. She is the guardian of the family legacy. The cousins are members of a radical Feminist denomination. The novel describes their relationships with the men in their lives and the tension between their legacy and their progressive beliefs.
About the Author
Inglis Cook was born in the Midwest and attended schools in that area. Upon graduating from college, he served in the US Army Reserves, after which he began a graduate studies program. Among his interests are communitarian settlements, Feminist movements, and religious ferment in mid-nineteenth century USA and their influence on trends in the 20th century. He published two previous novels-"Fair Are The Woodlands" and "The Parsley Eater."
