Workplace Vocabulary for ESL students

Steel-toe boots protect people who work in areas where there are foot hazards. They protect the toes, feet and ankles from minor and serious injuries. There are different boots and shoes for different industries and jobs. Electricians wear safety boots with thick rubber soles. Rubber helps them stay safe when they work with dangerous electrical wires and power lines. Construction workers work with many hazards; there are sharp objects, nails, broken glass, screws, broken bricks, blades and knives that can injure their feet and toes. Foot protection is made to keep workers'’ feet safe because it is are made with rigid materials and thick soles Steel-toe boots protect workers’ feet when they operate heavy machines and equipment. Warehouse workers use and work around forklifts - they lift and carry heavy loads and equipment. They use dollies and carts with wheels to move heavy loads. These loads can fall on their feet. Forklifts and other machines can accidentally run over their feet. Steel-toe-boots minimize impacts when accidents happen. Forestry, landscape and farm workers walk on uneven surfaces where it is easy to fall. They always wear safety boots to protect their ankles from falls, twists and sprains. Many safety boots and steel-toe boots have soles that are made with anti-slip rubber. There are slippery floors in restaurants, cafeteria kitchens and food processing plants where floors have water, grease and oils. Workers who walk on these surfaces wear safety shoes or boots with non-slip rubber soles. Non-slip soles protect them from falls. Safety boots help workers protect their feet when they work with corrosive or irritating materials, chemicals and explosives. They also protect workers’ feet when there are very high or very low temperatures in the workplace
