Taken together, these ceremonies of 1952-1955 the announcement of shocking large donations and local support; the Dwight Eisenhower letter; the Richard Nixon speech; the planned but canceled Bruck address; and the filling of the copper box—constitute what might be called the founding stream of Community Hospital. They were multiple events, separate but joined, shared by and moving with many of the same people along the flow of time. Before any patient had been treated, before any light had been turned on, before any person was employed, these events had imprinted an identity on the entity called Community Hospital.

About the Book
Community Hospital East (CHE) was the founding hospital of Community Health Network in Indiana. Beginning in the mid-1950s, CHE expressed the community spirit of eastern Indianapolis and Marion County. The story of CHE is the story of caregivers who answered the call of their neighbors, quickly becoming a leader in health-care and civic engagement. The history of CHE is one of passion, inspiration, courage, and commitment to excellence that changed the life of a community and its people.
