Gary’s dad hadn’t given him much advice before ditching him and his sister Nicole for good at their paternal grandmother’s house: don’t back your car up more than you absolutely have to, don’t speed through small towns, buy somebody a beer if they buy you a beer, date anyone you want but marry someone tall and thin. These were all one-offs, bits of wisdom that his dad came up with on the spur of the moment. The only piece of advice he’d actually tried to instill in Gary was: no matter what a cop says to you, you say ‘lawyer’ back.
