About the Book

Sara, a Jewish convert to the Christian faith, has established a new life in a foreign land. She must again recover after a suspicious fire destroys her home and restaurant. Friends offer help and encouragement. A startling revelation and another abduction lead to a deadly confrontation with the obsessed inquisitor Don Antonio Morales. At Sara’s lowest point, a miraculous reunion brings joy and a long tale of survival in the New World. But Sara now faces the likelihood of arrest by the Inquisition. She struggles with the cruelties of the Catholic church toward her people but gains strength from her family, friends, and a kind local priest. Sara must confront her fears and return to where she began. How will Sara face the trial she dreads? How do faith and courage grow? How will a dark secret and an old promise fulfilled help Sara finally find peace and the happy home she seeks?

About the Author

Beryl Carpenter loves the riches of Spanish history and culture. She has traveled there many times to explore its art, architecture and literature. She studied at Salamanca, a university founded in 1218 and visited by Columbus. Beryl speaks Spanish fluently and dabbles in Spanish cooking. When not traveling, the author and her husband live on the edge of the rain forest in Western Washington. In Far From a Pleasant Land, the author's first book, Sara Elena yearns for love and a home. Instead she is swept into the history-changing events of 1492 Spain, as Isabella and Ferdinand decree expulsion to all Jews. Sara must make the difficult choice to renounce her faith and heritage or leave Spain forever. Toward a Dark Horizon, the second of the series, finds Sara facing hardship and separation from her home and Juan Sanchez, the man she pledged to love. Juan travels with Columbus to find a new world, while Sara travels east seeking a welcoming country. Treachery follows close behind her. Great joy and heart-breaking news nearly overwhelm her. In When Doves Laughed, the third book, Sara must rebuild her life and recover from a suspicious fire in her home and restaurant. A startling revelation and another abduction lead to a confrontation with the obsessed inquisitor Don Antonio Morales. Sara now faces the likelihood of arrest by the Inquisition. At her lowest point, Juan miraculously returns. Sara decides to face her fears, with the help of loved ones, and return to where she began, before she can find hope and the home she desires.
