“Where Is My Home” is based on a true story of a cat named Sonic. He was described as “born to be wild” and was given that opportunity. After enduring many hardships, he longed to find a home. Example: Sonic came to a city street. The traffic was crowded and dangerous. With lightning speed, he darted between cars. Brakes screeched and horns honked as he splashed through rain puddles. Thunder rattled the air. “Yeooow!” he shrieked shivering with fright. Where is my home? Sonic’s problems began when he was left in a barn in South Jordan. His challenges included other cats, a skunk and a weasel. Finding food and shelter also presented problems. His 9-month journey continued through late summer, fall, winter and early spring. He battled sun, wind, snow and rain. Along the way, Sonic realized “there is no place like home,” and he goes to extreme measures to get there.

Walt Whitman said, “Home is where the heart is.” Children may stray, but within them is a desire for the love, care and safety of home. Sometimes bad choices or circumstances hinder their return, but like the prodigal son, they finally realize “there’s no place like home.” “Where Is My Home?” is based on a true story about a cat named Sonic who was described as “born to be wild.” When given the opportunity to be free, he realized that he wanted to go home. To get there, he traveled 30 miles as he battled weather, animals, people, hunger, sleep, sickness, traffic, loneliness and fear. When he arrived home nine months later, he entered the garage and snuggled into the quilt where he was born. Though “born to be wild,” he found “there is no place like home.” It could be called the story of the prodigal cat.
About the Author
Joan Romney Groves was an elementary school counselor for 23 years before retiring. She received the 2004 Utah School Counselor of the Year Award. She holds a BS (cum laude) from the University of Utah and a MEd from Brigham Young University. She is the mother of 6 and the grandmother of 28. She wants children to read TRUE stories. She believes children learn empathy and character development from these stories. She has published “The Antique Organ and Other Stories” for the Gale History Center, as well as family histories. Nancy Romney is an artist who enjoys painting character portraits. She wants her art to tell the stories of life. Joan E. Schuller added her artistic coloring to this book
