Emotional intelligence does not need to be present from birth. Again, EI is a skill that can be acquired and developed with practice. Additionally, emotional intelligence does not mean to be “touchy-feely”, to give in to any and everything, or to be justified when handling a problem or potential threat of a problem if higher in EI than others. Although tuning into one’s own and others’ emotions within a situation, EI does not connote being too emotional, or as some refer to as touchy-feely, but rather normalizing the expressed emotions to find a viable and rational solution that works. Sure, being in touch with feelings is part of EI, but the goal is to utilize the emotional information to inform subsequent decision-making. As stated prior, giving in or agreeing to something does not define emotional intelligence as EI is not personality. However, sometimes compromise, which differs from giving in and from sole agreeableness, may be needed when resolving issues, but compromise or agreeableness does not define and is not defined by emotional intelligence. Finally, when developing or honing emotional intelligence for effective communication, be careful not to assume or expect to be justified in decision-making and accomplishments or to be viewed as superior to those who lack the same level of EI. Instead, it is recommended to utilize one’s own emotional intelligence to help others sharpen their EI.
