About the Book

ABOUT THE BOOK As the world changes and the US becomes more competitively challenged by other economies it is easy to see that those who want to fill leadership positions will have to become more skilled and versatile. The US is no longer the automatic leader in many instances and as some would say, “the rising of the rest” provides opportunities and challenges for many, different from those of our traditional leaders. “Creating Your Leadership Discipline” shows how the advantages of those educated in a ‘free society’ with a higher education system that has a talent meritocracy rather than an exam meritocracy still have an advantage in becoming the leaders the world needs today. The book provides an overview of how the world has changed economically, politically, culturally, and technically. It examines a lot of what has been written on developing leadership qualities and provides an overview of many books pointing out pertinent aspects required for good leadership. It makes the case that learning and understanding one’s talents and then developing a discipline to promote and improve those talents will help to create a better leader. The Author’s writing style includes enjoyable short stories to help the reader learn about their talents and develop their disciplines. The book also drives home the point that being brought up in a free society really is an advantage in leading others with interpersonal skills and emotional intelligence; qualities necessary for today’s leader.

About the Author

THE AUTHOR Joe Cleggett is the owner of Tyson-Richard Consulting where he provides technical expertise to select law firms in the preparation of major claims. As an engineering executive with over forty years of experience, the last twenty-five being dedicated to executive management and leadership of some prestigious engineering firms, he developed corporate mentoring and training programs for senior managers making the leap to leadership positions. He has a strong technical education with an imaginative approach to management and leadership. Cleggett was born and brought up in one of the first towns in the US that most consider is in the cradle of liberty. He served (part time) as an elected official of this town for six years on the Executive Board and for more than 20 years on the Town’s Water Commission. During this period of his experience he served on many local and state commissions and held a federal appointment to an EPA study committee. His experience in both the private and public sectors at all levels has provided him with a wealth of experience in dealing with people and the problems we all face today. As he progressed to a senior executive level of his engineering career, he recognized the need to promote his talents and discipline his leadership style in accord with those talents. After mentoring senior managers into leaders and developing leadership courses for clients, using what he had learned about himself, he decided to put it all into a book for younger managers to have a roadmap to prepare for leadership positions in the more competitive world we in the US are faced with today. Cleggett created the book to be a shortcut in learning and understanding your talents and creating disciplines to promote yourself honestly and effectively. It is also designed to help the real leaders of tomorrow, those who get up every day to treat all people equally, remembering that ‘all people matter and have a purpose.’
