The Dream Catcher is a writing based upon a few critical years of the two main characters lives. Anna Doli is part Navajo and Jim Owens is part Cherokee. Anna has a doctorate from Oxford University in Languages while Jim has a doctorate from a US University. Both are CIA operatives of some merit having worked there for several years. The book describes their working together as well as their attempts to explore their Native American heritages. It describes their delving into some of the cultural aspects of their heritages. It gets into both their minds as they attempt to understand their upbringing and how that has affected their lives as grown people. Both are extremely dissatisfied with the events of the past related to the treatment of Native Americans by the United States Government.
Anna Doli is struggling within herself about the past treatment of the Navajo people by the US government. And she is struggling within herself as to what her relationship with the Navajo people should be in her grown up years. She is unhappy with so much that she sees within the Navajo people and their lives and attempts to understand what her role should be related to those feelings. And at times she is very unhappy within herself because she hasn't taken a great part on behalf of the Navajo people.
Jim Owens tries to understand himself and his feelings by delving into his past all the way back to his ancestor King Charlemagne. He also tries to reconcile his feelings about his time growing up in western North Carolina and northwest Washington State. His feelings about his western North Carolina times as a child are somewhat negative, while the opposite is true of his times as a child in northwest Washington State. He feels fortunate that the negative feelings of his youth have gradually gone away as he has aged and matured.
As the story progresses, Anna and Jim work together, traveling to various parts of the world related to their jobs as well as to their own personal needs. While the story ends a bit tragically, it does give much insight into the minds and lives of Anna and Jim. As their relationship develops, they become more and more aware of each other's feelings and how these feelings affect their daily lives.
Two other characters, Mick Wilson and Anthony Bassagli, play fairly prominent roles. Mick is high up in the CIA and Anthony is reputedly a high up mafia person. They react with Anna and Jim throughout the book. Mick, Jim, and Anthony have been a part of two other books by the author. Mick and Jim have worked together for several years in the intelligence field going way back to their time working together as Military Intelligence Officers and many other activities they were part of with the CIA.
One of the main intelligence activities written about is the story of how Anna, Jim, and Mick go about locating and capturing Markus Wolf and bringing him to justice. Wolf was the head of intelligence for East Germany during the Cold War years and was responsible for many activities directed against the United States and other countries of the world. Some regard him as the greatest intelligence operative to ever have lived, even greater than our own Allen Dulles. Wolf was a hard line devout Communist.
