FRIDAY: Early morning ring Theme: My senses Topic: Taste: Language development: We taste with our tongues Group: Grade R/0: Place: Around the interest table or on the story mat Aim: This activity is meant for:- Life skills: Greeting. Strengthen learners’ awareness of the importance of taste. Taste is a sense that can warn of danger. Teach them the importance of looking after themselves. Taste is one of our five senses- sight, smell, touch, hearing, taste. We taste with our tongues. Developing a sense of security and belonging concentration, patience and socializing. Self-respect and respect for others. Imagination. Self –image Scientific/mathematical concepts: Taste is one of our senses. Sight, smell, touch, hearing and taste. We taste with our tongues. Different substances taste different. Language development: Pre reading exercise (recognition of symbols and words-names), socializing and chatting. Verbal expression and self expression, hearing and listening skills. New concepts and vocabulary: sweet, sour, bitter, tart, taste buds, tongue. Tasting table Preparation: Prepare a taste table, with sweet, sour, bitter, salty, tart, savoury and spicy foods. Place a glass with water and several spoons next to the table. Water must be changed regularly. Presentation: Show learners pictures of different foods. Allow them to taste the foods displayed. Ask the learners to identify the food they tasted. Let them sort the foods into, categories; sweet, salty, bitter, savoury, tart, sour etc. Talk about healthy food. Ask learners to tell you what they think is healthy to eat. Ask the learners; how do we taste, what do you taste with. Let them tell you: We taste with our tongues. What happens if we eat things that are too hot: We burn our tongues. Too cold food can be unpleasant to eat as well. Different people like different kinds of food, Different animals also. I eat my peas (Traditional rhyme from Silberg and Schiller p187) I eat my peas with honey, I’ve done it all my life, It makes the peas taste funny, But it keeps them on the knife Theme: My senses Topic: Taste Cutting out and pasting – the food we eat Aim: This activity is meant:- Life Skills: To teach children about their senses. We taste with our tongues. Different foods taste different. Eating healthy. Enjoyment and security. Self-image, self reliance, self confidence, and task completion. Decision making. Free role play in the dolls corner promotes decision making, creative thinking and imagination. Small muscle control -teaching children how to use their fingers for writing Numeracy and scientific concepts: Taste is one of our five senses. Touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste. Size, shape, number. How much-volume (Glue). How many/few(pictures) Spatial relation and laterality: Above, below, handedness-left or right handed. Strengthen the learners’ understanding of left and right: Crossing the midline and filling the whole page-essential for reading and writing skills. Perceptual training and physical development: Cutting and pasting and drawing –fine muscle control, visual perception. Small and large muscle control (this helps children to learn to read and write in primary school. Taste is one of our five senses. Touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste. Side activities promote a variety of motor and perceptual skills. Language development: Socializing and chatting, knowledge improvement, pre reading and writing skills, hearing and listening skills, verbal expression and self expression. New concepts- fruit, healthy eating, vegetables, Taste is one of our five senses. Touch, sight, hearing, smell, taste, nose, mouth, lips, tongue Materials: Large paper plates Roughly cut out pictures from magazines, food advertisements and newspapers Black felt tip pen for names and date Glue and glue brushes Round tip scissors. Preparation: Collect magazines/newspapers/advertisments with pictures of food Cut the pictures out roughly – allow a broad enough edge around the pictures, to allow the learners cut them out properly. Mix glue and set out materials on a large plastic sheet on the floor or on a large enough table (2 pushed together) if avaiable. Paint brushes, felt tip pens, crayons and scissors must stand upright in plastic holders or tins. Place roughly cut out pictures in a couple of large flat open top boxes for the children to choose from.
