In my experienced opinion after 10 years, the Department Of Corrections (DOC) is not about rehabilitating and helping an individual to become a productive citizen in society. On the contrary, from my experience in the G.D.C., it is a multi -million dollar industry with people as its main product. Georgia is the only state that does not pay its offenders for services rendered. I could not believe that this is legal in the state of Georgia. It appeared that in 2005 slavery was still supported by the Constitution of the United States of America! The 13th Amendment, section one states as follows: “Neither slavery not involuntary servitude, 'except as punishment for a crime, whereof the party shall have been duly convicted', shall exist in the United States or any place subject to its jurisdiction.” This says to me that 'slavery and involuntary servitude are legal in the prison system'! Perhaps this is why so many of the officers would point out to us, the inmates, that we had no rights in the system. I believe that a human being ought to have some rights in any and all situations of life. How is this helping anyone to become a productive citizen to lock them away in slavery and involuntary servitude for whatever number of years? I believe that the police and the prison system form the largest legal, organized “GANG” in America. And, they are equipped to kill at a moment's notice! From what I could determine from my research and experience, the grievance process is also flawed. Every grievance, whether right or wrong, must go through a process where they may be rejected for any reason, at any time. For example, with a Deputy Warden such as Catherine Crosby, at College State Prison, I don't believe that any grievance ever actually left the institution. Deputy Warden Crosby was cocky enough to tell us that she was not worried about any grievance because she was confident that her boss would always rule in her favor. She was not the only one to constantly inform the inmates that they were not concerned about any grievances. They would inform the inmates that we could call or write whoever we desired, nothing would change!

About the Author
Christopher Watkins, a sophmore in college, the son of a pastor, makes one wrong move with a friend and spends ten years behind bars. However, it was here in the prison system that God answered his mother’s prayer and not only protected him but also matured and used him to minister to others, leading many to the saving knowledge of Jesus Christ. His mother, a retired educator and pastor of a thriving church, remained by his side and encouraged him every step of the way as God revealed so many lessons to her as well.
