One late summer’s day Lucy was itching to go on an adventure. She grabbed her backpack and began filling it with the items she would need: some trail mix for a snack, water and a small bowl for Max, a jacket, rope, flashlight, a small first aid kit, the map of the woods, and of course her compass. She dressed in long pants, a T-shirt and hiking boots. She always wore long pants into wood to avoid bug bites and poison ivy. She tied her hair up in a pony tail and was ready to go.
Lucy whistled for Max and told her parents goodbye as she headed off into the woods. As she was walking down the trail, she pulled out the map trying to decide which area she should explore. Lucy had already explored much of the area nearby, so she was going to have to go much further into the woods than she had ever gone alone before. She decided to explore an area further down the mountain. From the map, she was able to see that there was a river a few miles South of where she was. Max was busy sniffing around, so Lucy pulled out her compass and started towards the trail that would take her in the direction she wanted to go, knowing Max would quickly catch up.
As Lucy walked down the trail, Max would weave in and out of the trees, sometimes picking up the scent of other animals. He was always good to never stray too far from Lucy. He knew his job was to protect her. Lucy loved watching the animals scurry about and gazing up at the trees. She once read a book about identifying trees and was able to point out a couple she recognized. She really enjoyed nature and being outdoors.
The trail she had chosen to take was an easy one since it was mostly downhill. Every now and then she would come across a small stump or rock sticking out in the middle of the trail. She knew to go slow on unfamiliar trails and she was able to avoid tripping over anything that was in her path. Lucy pulled out her map to see how much further she had to go until she would reach the river. From the map, it looked like it wouldn't be much further now.
