“My dress and veil will be from my cousin, Carole Harver, after her wedding to an Army doctor the week before,” Miss Berry said. Miss Lowe replied as she wiped the blackboard. “I know the kinfolk of her Dr. Maynard. He’s related to the Wrenslows, bigwigs in this town, and their scion, Jerry, who is in the Air Corps now.” She uses a word Teddie has never heard before. He blurts, “What’s that? Shh-on?” She whirls toward him in the corner of the classroom and replies automatically to her student. “Scion; a descendant, an heir.” Teddie says, “Hair? He’s a hairball, all right. And hare-brained.” “No, Teddie. ‘Heir’ means Jerry inherits everything––the Wrenslow furniture factory, the farmland, the money from selling land to the munitions plant. Spelled ‘h-e-i-r’. You’re the Clarmont scion, the heir of your folks’ property.”

About the Book
The families living in the Missouri Ozarks in 1946 had a lot to be proud about: Their local boy, Harry S. Truman, had recently been elected president, and there were opportunities to be seized. Having grown up during the Roaring Twenties, the parents of this time had already survived much, including the Great Depression, the Dustbowl, and war-time rationing. Their children—if they didn’t work—rode their bikes to school or simply walked. It’s against this backdrop that soldiers begin to return home, careers open up, and families set their sights on property, prestige, and prosperity. However, as families anticipate a great post-war era, the growing threat of communism rears its head. About the Author
Margery A. Neely spent her early childhood in Springfield, Missouri—gateway to the Ozarks. A graduate of Missouri State University and the University of Missouri, she is an emeritus professor from Kansas State University. She lives in Manhattan, Kansas, and has four children and ten grandchildren.
