Chapter 1
Simone
We were standing in my living room, just standing there. Our fingers were intertwined with one another. He was looking down onto my glowing face, a glow that had been given me. I was staring into his penetrating green eyes --they where my kryptonite. Paralyzing, chilling, and piercingly sharp green eyes. Every time I gazed into them I became weak. No matter how hard I tried to be strong, or how I tried to fight the sensation to give in, I always surrendered. It was as if his eyes could look directly into my soul, and knew every little secret that I tried to hide under lock and key.
He pulled me close to him, tightly, securely. He held me so firmly I could feel the rhythm of his heartbeat. Every time I breathed deeply, his beat would quicken, and skip on the fifth beat. He liked holding me --I could tell. I could feel that he never wanted to let go. He would adjust himself to find a way to engulf me even more. Even if it was impossible, I knew he was going to try. He kissed my hair, inhaled my scent. Faster and faster the beat grew. I calmly laid my head on his beating chest, letting every thump hit my eardrum.
Soon his body tensed, mood shifted, and his grip became forceful, rough. Security turned into fear. I didn't know what was happening. My heart began to hit just as hard as his, if not harder. Mine beat out of fear. He tightened his grip around my arms and pushed me away from him, but when I looked up to find those beautiful color greens, they were as red as merlot. His face was different. It was no longer him. It was someone I always tried to forget. And before I knew anything, I woke up.
My head was pounding. I popped two aspirins.
Today was one of my worst days in a long time. I had tossed and turned all night long, which meant today would be long. And I was right. Anything that could go wrong did, and everything that was supposed to go right didn't. I couldn't take it anymore.
“Anastasia, please cancel my 3:00 for today. I will be leaving soon. Something has come up.”
I needed the rest of the day off to clear my head. I wanted to go home put on some Anita Baker, my big TSU Hoody, pick up a movie or two, and just relax.
I heard Anastasia's desk phone ring twice. “Ms. Harrison, before you go, there's a Noel Delton on line one, about a house he saw on 4th Ave.”
All I could do was roll my eyes and sigh to myself right before I picked up the phone. I really wanted to leave. And being in this office was driving me up a never-ending wall of insanity.
I grabbed my headset. “This is Simone Harrison.”
“Ms. Harrison, this is Noel,” he sang out.
I started to rub my temples. “Oh, Mr. Delton, how are you this afternoon?”
“I'm very well, thank you, and yourself?”
“I'm doing well. Thanks for asking”
“I was calling in regards to this beautiful stoned mansion off of 4th and Sherry.” I really wasn't up to playing around with him today, so I just cut to the chase, and made sure I showed my irritability.
“Mr. Delton, did you get a number, and if you did, how much are they looking for?”
“Well, the answer to your first question is No, I did not. Therefore, there is no need to answer the second.” He giggled as he jokingly responded. I found nothing funny, but what was amusing is how he had all this money to spend on a house, but never took actually finding one seriously.
He often said, “Now, Ms. Harrison, I'm paying you a lot of money to find me the house of my dreams. I'm old so I won't be dreaming for long!” I would always look at him crazy when he said that, because the man was paying me next to nothing.
Not long after, I ended the call with the last ounce of patience I had within me. Anastasia told me that she had cancelled the rest of my appointments for the day. I quickly left the office before anyone could ask me another question. I walked out to my Mercedes and started up the engine, dropped the top, put my new coach shades on the very tip of my nose, pushed them up, and just began to drive. I had no actual destination, but I knew if I just kept driving, I would get to where I needed to be.
After thirty minutes of Dwele singing in my ear, accompanied by some hard thinking, I ended up in front of a very familiar but distant house. I turned the car off and sat there for a moment.
I took a deep breath. “Just breathe, Simone, and calm down.”
I got out of the car and slowly moved toward that wooden porch that squeaked on the third step. As I got closer, my breathing became very short. I was extremely tense and couldn't hold it in. My knees became weak as my hands started to shake like a California earthquake, but I knew what I had to do and that now was the time to do it. I stepped up to the door and lifted my fist. I intended to knock, but before I could follow through, the door swung open, revealing a very familiar face.
“Oh my, is that you, Simone?” My mother seemed so happy to see me that her little face lit up.
I smiled “Yea, Mama, it's me!”
My mother was a short woman, but strong. My mama was five feet tall and tough as nails. It was good to see Mama after all this time.
